Funding Harvard Study: the Menzies and Other Awards.
Many applicants to Harvard also look at the Frank Knox, Fulbright, John Monash and Ramsay awards. The Menzies has a clear rule about holding them, so read it before you accept any offer.
The Rule on Other Scholarships
“must not have accepted or be planning to accept another major scholarship (other than directly from ANU or Harvard) of more than USD 30,000. Such scholarships include, but are not limited to, Fullbright [sic], Frank Knox, Ramsay and Monash awards.”
The same words appear in the eligibility list on the scholarship page of the Australian National University (ANU), which administers the award. In practice, you can’t take up another major scholarship worth more than US$30,000 alongside the Menzies, other than funding that comes directly from the ANU or Harvard. Check with the ANU before you accept another offer.
Awards you can hold alongside it
Clause 6 lets a Menzies Scholar hold other scholarships at the same time, as long as they don’t conflict with clause 3(h) and the scholar tells the Harvard Club of Australia through its administrator at hcaustralia.clubs.harvard.edu.
Tell the selection committee about all your funding
The ANU asks shortlisted candidates to give full financial disclosure of other awards, employer sponsorship, Harvard funding and any other financial benefits before the interview, and to check with Harvard beforehand what funding they may be eligible for.
Harvard’s own aid
Funding from Harvard itself is outside the US$30,000 limit, but clause 2 says the value of the Menzies depends on the financial aid a recipient receives from Harvard. Each Harvard school runs its own financial aid; see Harvard admissions and aid.

Can I hold the Menzies with…
These answers are based on each award’s published value and on the awards clause 3(h) of the Conditions of Award names. They don’t replace the ANU’s advice. Check with the ANU before you accept another offer.
…the Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship?
Not if you have accepted it or plan to accept it.
Clause 3(h) names Frank Knox awards among the major scholarships a Menzies applicant must not have accepted or be planning to accept.
This award comes from Harvard, but the clause names it, so the exception for scholarships directly from the ANU or Harvard doesn’t appear to cover it. If you are offered both, check with the ANU.
It doesn’t publish a single amount to compare with the US$30,000 in clause 3(h). The clause names it either way.
What the Conditions of Award say about the Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship
“must not have accepted or be planning to accept another major scholarship (other than directly from ANU or Harvard) of more than USD 30,000.”
Conditions of Award 131/2025, clause 3(h) (opens in a new tab) “Such scholarships include, but are not limited to, Fullbright [sic], Frank Knox, Ramsay and Monash awards.”
Conditions of Award 131/2025, clause 3(h) (opens in a new tab) …the Fulbright Australia Postgraduate Scholarship (Master’s, General Category)?
Not if you have accepted it or plan to accept it.
Clause 3(h) names Fulbright awards (spelt “Fullbright”) among the major scholarships a Menzies applicant must not have accepted or be planning to accept.
Its published value, from US$75,000, is more than the US$30,000 in clause 3(h).
What the Conditions of Award say about the Fulbright Australia Postgraduate Scholarship
“must not have accepted or be planning to accept another major scholarship (other than directly from ANU or Harvard) of more than USD 30,000.”

Conditions of Award 131/2025, clause 3(h) (opens in a new tab) …the General Sir John Monash Scholarship?
Not if you have accepted it or plan to accept it.
Clause 3(h) names Monash awards among the major scholarships a Menzies applicant must not have accepted or be planning to accept.
Its value is published in Australian dollars, so we don’t compare it with the US$30,000 in clause 3(h). The clause names it either way.
What the Conditions of Award say about the General Sir John Monash Scholarship
“must not have accepted or be planning to accept another major scholarship (other than directly from ANU or Harvard) of more than USD 30,000.”
Conditions of Award 131/2025, clause 3(h) (opens in a new tab) “Such scholarships include, but are not limited to, Fullbright [sic], Frank Knox, Ramsay and Monash awards.”

Its value is published in Australian dollars, so we don’t compare it with the US$30,000 in clause 3(h). The clause names it either way.

Conditions of Award 131/2025, clause 3(h) (opens in a new tab)
…an award not listed here?
Clause 3(h) covers major scholarships of more than US$30,000, other than those directly from the ANU or Harvard. If the clause doesn’t name an award, its value and who makes it decide whether the clause applies. For amounts in other currencies, check with the ANU. Clause 6 covers the rest:
“A recipient of the Award is permitted to hold concurrent scholarships provided there is no conflict with Section 3(h), and advice is given to HCA via their administrator at https://hcaustralia.clubs.harvard.edu.”
Timing
Rounds run at different times of year, so you may already hold or expect another offer by the time of a Menzies interview. The most recent published dates:
- R.G. Menzies: the 2026 round ran from 12 December 2025 to 9 February 2026. The Harvard Club of Australia says applications open in November each year and close by the following February, with interviews in March and April. Check the ANU scholarship page for the 2027 round’s status.
- Frank Knox: 2027–28 applications were open when we checked (21 October 2026) and close on Monday 1 February 2027 at 11:59pm EST. You don’t need a Harvard admission decision to apply, but Fellowships go only to people who are admitted.
- Fulbright: the 2027–28 postgraduate round ran from 12 March to 1 July 2026. Fulbright says its Australian applications open in February and close in July each year.
- John Monash: the round for 2027 scholarships closed on 30 June 2026; applications for 2028 scholarships open in May 2027.
- Ramsay: the 2026 round ran from 2 February to 23 March 2026; dates for 2027 are still to be announced.
The Menzies can’t be deferred (clause 7), although clause 12 lets the Harvard Club of Australia vary that in exceptional circumstances. For anything else about combining or timing awards, check with each body, and with the ANU before you accept another offer. See also planning around Harvard’s deadlines and what the award commits you to.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants
The Roberta Sykes Scholarship (Aurora Education Foundation) offers up to AUD 75,000 for full-time postgraduate study at a recognised overseas university. When we checked, its portal showed the current round open from 5 October 2026 to 29 January 2027. It isn’t named in clause 3(h); whether it counts as a major scholarship over US$30,000 depends on the amount, so check with the ANU.
